ST. LOUIS — Bayer CropScience has agreed to pay $750 million to settle several lawsuits with U.S. farmers who claimed a strain of the company's unapproved genetically modified rice contaminated the food supply and hurt their crop prices.
LAFAYETTE, La. — Farmers are gearing up for the annual rice harvest, but low prices might make it difficult to turn a profit on this year’s crop.
It’s a stark contrast from last year, when rice farmers were enjoying record yields and strong market prices.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — German conglomerate Bayer CropScience should pay a dozen Arkansas farmers nearly $50 million for allowing a genetically altered strain of rice to escape into the commercial market, damaging rice prices in 2006, a jury ruled Thursday.
LONOKE, Ark. — Bayer CropScience knew that if an experimental strain of its genetically modified rice got into the commercial market it would be disastrous, a lawyer for a dozen Arkansas rice farmers said Wednesday as a civil trial on the issue got under way.
