PIERRE, S.D. — The deadline has been extended seven months for the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources to begin issuing permit coverage that will set requirements for applying pesticide to any body of water in South Dakota.
WEST FARGO, N.D. — The EPA has released a draft proposal for a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit process for pesticide applications on or in water. This is a result of the 6th Circuit Court’s decision regarding National Cotton Council of America v. EPA.
The number of acres in North Dakota treated with pesticides reached a record level in 2008, a recently released study shows.
The study conducted by North Dakota State University and the federal Agriculture Department’s statistics service found that pesticide-treated acres in the state two years ago reached 32.6 million, up 45 percent from the previous study four years earlier.
The plane swoops down over a field, racing along at 140 mph only a few feet above the corn stalks before releasing its chemicals and pulling back into the sky.
It seems a vestige of another era — or a scene from a classic film — but throughout the Midwest it’s an everyday summer occurrence.
