Cucumber Salad: A Summertime Family Tradition
For as long as I can remember, cucumber salad has been a part of every Studt family (on my paternal side) summertime potluck and gathering. I dont know if any of my cousins, aunts, or uncle...

Garden Time?
Our recent stretch of mild weather has the trees beginning to bud out, some south facing tulips already in bloom and the lakes in Becker and Otter Tail County free of ice. This of course has many peo...

Hortiscope: Opening closet door can set back flowering
Q: I have a question about my Christmas cactus plant. If I put the plant in a coat closet, is it OK if I open the door twice a day to get my coat or does it need total darkness for 13 hours a day?By Don Kinzler , November 04, 2011
Hortiscope: In sandy soil, water frequently but not long
Q: We planted 10 Black Hills spruce trees this spring. Most are doing very well, but three have several brown and brittle branches with no needles. My husband had the sprinkler system on for 2½ hours tonight and watered the trees three days ago for about an hour. I think they are being extremely overwatered, which is killing them.By Don Kinzler , October 28, 2011
Hortiscope: Managing grapevines both art and science
Q: I have severe pine needle scale on my spruce trees. Today, I noticed the males were in flight, so I’m guessing this is the second generation for the season. Is it too late for a systemic drench application? What product is the most potent systemic to use? There seems to be several brand names with different active ingredients. I have access to professional-grade chemicals.By Don Kinzler , October 21, 2011
Hortiscope: Plant maple saplings in their boxes outdoors
Q: Earlier this summer, I picked up some maple seeds in the park and planted them in wooden boxes. Now I have little saplings. Winter will be approaching soon, and I’m not quite sure what to do with the little guys.By Don Kinzler , October 14, 2011
Hortiscope: Several species of chokecherries on the market
Q: I think I’ve read every posting on the Hortiscope website, but I still have a few questions. I live in Ohio and just purchased clumps of prunus v. schuber. I do not have a green thumb and have no knowledge of plants. I separated the clumps into separate trees and planted them. Did I just kill them by doing so?By Don Kinzler , October 07, 2011
Hortiscope: It’s been a crazy year for tomato growers
Q: This is the third summer I’ve grown tomato plants in my backyard. I’ve had good success so far. This summer, my plants grew to enormous sizes but have yielded only three mature fruits.By Don Kinzler , September 30, 2011
Hortiscope: Best to divide bulbs when they’re dormant
Q: I have three pots filled with amaryllis plants. I start watering the plants in late winter or early spring. After blooming, I put them outside for the summer. All the pots have side bulbs that I want to separate and repot. At the end of summer, the leaves die back, so I stop watering them and put them into the garage. They rest there until I start watering them again.By Don Kinzler , September 23, 2011
Creating a master gardener
Park Rapids, Minn. - Long ago, a seasoned gardener offered a bit of wisdom to Donna Holmes: “Whatever you do, don’t make gardens so big that it becomes work, especially flowers.”

Hortiscope: Cutting dying branches helpful in long run
Q: We purchased an older home that has two beautiful spruce trees. They were planted back in the 1930s. However, they have many dead branches on the bottom. If I trim these off, will it ruin the look of the trees? What should I do? Will new branches grow after I trim off the dead ones?By Don Kinzler , September 16, 2011
Hortiscope: Weather conditions lead to poor grape crop
Q: I have a huge grapevine growing on a chain-link fence. Last year was wonderful because I got so many grapes. This year, the vine grew what would have been another beautiful crop, but the grapes are drying up as they are ripening. What is causing this?By Don Kinzler , September 02, 2011
Hortiscope: Now is the time to attack persistent weeds
Q: Do lawns generally show any response to micronutrients, such as iron, sulphur, zinc or boron, so that a soil test would be worth the effort?By Don Kinzler , August 26, 2011
Hortiscope: Willow tree could suffer from blight, canker
Q: I have some questions about a willow tree disease. A customer purchased some golden willows from us. Since planting them, he has found some glossy black patches on the bark.By Don Kinzler , August 19, 2011
Hortiscope: Tulip bulb likely lacked cold treatment
Q: I planted tulip bulbs in a pot inside, and I water it daily. It has been more than a month now, but there is no sign of plant generating anything. What should I do?By Don Kinzler , August 12, 2011
Hortiscope: Infestation likely cause of trees’ oozing sap
Q: I have two huge cottonwood trees. This spring, they began oozing sap. It started with just a fine sort of spray covering everything within a 100-foot radius or so. Now it is coming down in full-sized droplets!By Don Kinzler , August 05, 2011
Hortiscope: Heat stress causes trees to drop foliage
Q: I planted five arborvitaes in large pots last fall. About a week ago, they all turned brown. However, there is a little green on the exterior layers. The summer heat has been brutal, but I have been watering regularly. Is this just a simple case of heat stroke? Is there anything I can do to save them?By Don Kinzler , July 29, 2011
