AMY'S RANCH SLANTS Pepper
Since Pepper joined our family, shes changed my mind about dogs. My husband and I have had our share of bad luck with dogs over the years; pups mostly. I got soured on the idea of having a dog after... Posted on 12/9/11 at 7:00 PM
North Dakota’s laws prohibiting animal cruelty are so weak that prosecutors seldom can take action, animal protection advocates have long complained.
After a new proposal announced Thursday, two separate coalitions are championing competing proposals to better protect animals — one that could go before voters in November and one that will go to legislators next year.
Dear Dr. Fox: I recently acquired a female Chihuahua from Canine Castaways. She is 5 years old. She can be very timid but gets quite vocal and aggravated when my husband gives me something or touches me.
Dear Dr. Fox: My male Persian cat (a rescue cat) was neutered when he was over 2 years old. He has had oxalate stones removed twice in the past two years. He was thoroughly examined by a veterinarian internist/specialist.
Dear Dr. Fox: We recently lost our beloved dog, Ginger, to immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). We are heartbroken. She was only 8 years old.
We have had dogs all our lives and had never heard of this devastating disease. After researching it online, it seems that it’s fairly common and is possibly brought on by overvaccination.
Dear Dr. Fox: We have a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier who is scratching and rubbing his backside. We have been to three vets and have had his glands cleaned. They provided a spray (CortiSpray), and I use 1 percent hydrocortisone on his raw spots.
Dear Dr. Fox: We recently learned of something
called bobcat tick fever (Cytauxzoonosis). Numerous cats have been lost to it. Our neighbors just lost one of their four cats.
We understand that most cats do not survive and that not much can be done to prevent it. Our neighbors are using a powder form of Sevin insecticide on their surviving cats. Is it safe and effective?
Dear Dr. Fox: I want to tell you how much I appreciate your advice about changing diet. It can make a lot of health problems go away. My 6-year-old schnauzer mix, Sam, had recurrent skin problems and frequent episodes of diarrhea. Veterinary treatments with various medications gave her only temporary relief at best.
Dear Dr. Fox: I know your intentions are good. But do you know the details about the horrific animal agriculture industry that produces cat food? For you to say that it is “unethical” to raise a vegan cat does not seem to make much sense, given that the alternative is far worse for so many more animals.
Dear Dr. Fox: Tell the woman who wrote about her cat throwing up that my 10-year-old Siamese used to throw up daily but now has stopped.
My cat didn’t chew his food thoroughly, and he ate too fast. I now add ½ cup of water and cover his food so he can’t eat it for 20 minutes. It changes the dry food to wet mush; problem solved.
Dear Dr. Fox: My 18-month-old black Lab mix (rescued two months ago) frequently has loose stools. Not watery, just loosely formed. This doesn’t seem to bother him, but I am concerned that he will need to have his anal glands cleaned out frequently (as per his vet). He tested positive for giardia and then tested negative after being treated.
Dear Dr. Fox: I appreciate your protection of animals other than dogs and cats. I also wonder how you can even stomach or print the letters like the person who insists on toilet training the cats and now has one peeing on her bed.
Dear Dr. Fox: A big coyote has been spotted in our neighborhood, and I wonder what we can do. This is a dangerous animal, and I worry about it killing my cats who get out in the yard, and even my grandchildren when they come visiting. Please advise
