BISMARCK (AP) — The National Crop Insurance Services group says a record $8.6 billion in crop insurance indemnity payments were made to U.S. farmers in 2008, and a lot of that money went to farmers in the Dakotas.
FARGO (AP) — The Agriculture Department says cool temperatures over the past week have delayed late-maturing crops in North Dakota and there are signs that the grasshopper population is higher than normal.
Sens. Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan and Rep. Earl Pomeroy, all D-N.D., announced today that North Dakota will receive $5.5 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Emergency Conservation Program for farmland damage caused by floods or other natural disasters from 2008 and 2009.
Bismarck-based MDU Resources Group Inc. is the first to join a Michigan company developing a high-voltage power line that its backers say would transmit wind energy from the Dakotas to homes in Chicago and other cities.

An older home in Carpio will be razed this summer to make room for a solar-powered greenhouse to produce organic vegetables and plants for research by students and faculty members at Minot State University-Bottineau.
Just Wind plans to start construction on the first phase of its Logan County wind farm this month, according to Jeff Metzger, president of the company.
“We look to start construction in the third week of June,” he said. “Our goal is to have 20 foundations complete in 60 days.”
A nonprofit foundation that owns more than 1,700 acres of wildlife habitat in three North Dakota counties is not required to sell all its land to obey the state’s anti-corporate farming law, a judge has ruled.
