On the prairies of North Dakota, the grain elevator is a familiar and classic landmark. Now, the State Historical Society of North Dakota has initiated a photo contest to gather images and information on grain elevators in North Dakota.
There something that seems to almost mesmerize people when they see hundreds of turkeys slow-roasting in the Aneta, N.D., City Park for the town’s annual turkey barbecue. Perhaps it’s the motion of the birds on the spits. Maybe it’s the delicious smell.
We just got our wild rice back from the parcher, a plump 70-pound bag of fresh new-crop wild rice, hand-harvested by canoe from the creek just below our house.
Not by me, though – I went ricing once and that was enough.

Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion
The 55th annual Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion continues today at the WMSTR grounds in Rollag. Gates open at 6 a.m., with ladies’ activities starting at 9 a.m. on Main Street. The morning parade and horsepower demonstration both get underway at 10 a.m., and a steam hammer plate-stamping exhibition begins at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The afternoon parade gets underway at 2 p.m. Evening activities will include live music at 7 and 8 p.m., with an Honorary Steam Queen presentation at 7:30 p.m., and a “Sparkle Show” in the Sandbox after dark.
