RURAL REFLECTIONS A Winter without Cattle
If you wonder why I haven't written about our cattle lately, the
reason is simple; they're gone. I sold the cattle last December, the
Hay in January and the straw last week. It has been a wint... Posted on 3/1/13 at 11:52 AM
NORTHVILLE, S.D. — Dick and Janell Meyer, who farm in the Northville, S.D., area, want a state law that says if a wild animal — deer — is destroying their property they can shoot it. State officials say that’s impractical.
FARGO, N.D. — Tim Hase of Martin, N.D., has a $47,000 problem because of the Anderson Seed Co. melt-down. He figures that if he gets his share of a $280,000 bond he’ll be compensated about $93 — about the price of a tank of gas.
DAZEY, N.D. — After more than a year, Lloyd Wieland is waiting.
Wieland delivered two groups of cattle to North Dakota Natural Beef LLC, at its New Rockford, N.D., slaughter plant in the fall of 2010. More than a year later — despite assurances, and after a bond payout — he’s still owed about $45,000 on the last load.
OMAHA, Neb. — House Agriculture Committee ranking member Collin Peterson, D-Minn., said March 4 that he will run for re-election, partly because he is not sure that Congress will finish a farm bill in 2012 and he wants to be on hand for writing it.
TOWNER, N.D. — After a few years of having winters we’d like to forget, this year, we’ve gotten a winter we want to remember . . . so far. On Jan. 10, I did chores wearing a vest instead of a jacket and there wasn’t a speck of snow on the ground. It was so nice, I even had my earflaps tucked up inside of my cap, and that doesn’t often happen in January in North Dakota.
In the midst of what have been good years in agriculture generally this decade, the dairy business in North Dakota has nearly nose-dived. The number of dairy cows in the state is down 60 percent in the past 10 years alone, going from about 50,000 in 2000 to only 21,000 milking cows this month, falling 4,000 in just the past year, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report Friday.
