WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Western Canadian farmers are scrambling to find scarce canola seed as they re-plant crops snuffed out by frost and insects.
Farmers have until mid- to late June to plant ahead of insurance deadlines, but the later they sow canola, the higher the risk of damage later from heat or frost. Canada is the biggest producer and exporter of canola, used to produce vegetable oil.
Even if a newly sprouted canola plant goes through harsh weather, growers know it's hanging on if its center remains green.
But after a recent frost, alive was not the state for much of the canola in North Dakota's Cavalier County, according to growers in the area.
FARGO, N.D. — U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., flanked by five other Democratic senators, and producer/processors from their states, launched an effort Wednesday to re-up federal support for biofuels.
The wheat markets had losses of 15 to 20 cents last week, following along with the steep losses seen in the row crop markets. Noncommercial money was flowing out of the grain markets ahead of the holiday breaks and year-end.
