Judge makes no immediate ruling on Roundup Ready sugar beet seed

Attorneys told the president of American Crystal Sugar Co. that a federal judge in San Francisco on Friday made no decision but rather took under advisement the request to halt immediately the use of any Roundup Ready sugar beet seed.

Sugar industry awaits decision that could ban planting of GMO crop

Most of the Red River Valley’s 2010 sugar beet crop could be affected by a federal judge’s ruling expected later this week.

The ruling could prohibit area beet farmers from planting beets that have been genetically modified. If so, farmers would need to plant conventional sugar beets, supplies of which are limited, officials say.

Cooperstown has meeting on beets

The Green vision Group is working with Energy beets for ethanol production. The GVG is made up of four people in North Dakota and an advisory council of farmers and businessmen. Energy beets are sugar beets that will work to produce ethanol with good economics compared to today’s ethanol, according to Maynard Helgaas, GVG president. Energy beets have been shown to yield 38-40 ton at the Oakes Research Test site under irrigation. High yield of Energy beets will transpose into more sugar production which will produce more ethanol.

At its annual meeting Thursday at the Fargo Holiday Inn, the Moorhead-based cooperative reported net revenues for fiscal year 2009 totaling $1.20 billion for the crop planted in 2008.
