Summer supplies
I suppose there are some good tradeoffs to the extended cool weather. If you forget your groceries in the car trunk overnight when you get home from town, it’s just like having them in the fridge, or freezer.

Leadership and horse sense
I got home late one recent night from speaking at a meeting about 175 miles west of our ranch, and since the next morning was my column deadline and I was driving until 1:30 a.m. in the wee hours of morning, I’m going to write about the speech. It’s either that or write about the magical properties of sunflower seeds and gas station coffee to keep you driving and alert late at night. I’ll pick the speech.

Heavy metal
I’m really proud of our little hometown hardware store. I always said you can’t stump them. They have everything you need, lots of some things, and at least one of anything else you might imagine.

Neighbors
For about 40 years, Harry was basically our closest neighbor, a few miles north of our place, and then a few miles west of our place. My dad and Harry were different from each other in a lot of ways in terms of personality, but they were also the same.

Back in service
I drive a pickup that’s a mere 12 years old. Sure, it’s got scratches, dents, a tricky tailgate and a few other character saving scars, but it still seems too new to fit my cowboy persona.

Flying, zipping and snorkeling
Our winter on the Northern Plains is off to a cold start. The mercury has spent a lot more time below the zero than above the zero, according to Mr. Fahrenheit’s discomfort scale. The phenomena has made me wonder all the more why I got on the plane to head back north after a week on the Yucatan peninsula of sunny Mexico.

Christmas gifts
We had a pretty good Christmas here at the Taylor Ranch. When calves are $2 a pound, it sure helps make the holidays jolly. We put the money right back into circulation and bought a few nice Christmas presents for family, young and old.

From hay fields to Harvard
When I was a young high school graduate, the thought of going to an expensive eastern Ivy League school never even crossed my mind. If it had crossed my mind, I’m sure I’d have chased the thought away from our modest and mortgaged ranch.

Helping hands
“Many hands make light work,” goes the old saying. We’ve probably all heard or lived those words. It comes from an old English playwright named Heywood, the Google tells me, but it’s as true today as it was in 1546.
