Biodynamic farming

In this March 30, 2010 photo, Bonny Doon Vineyard employee Heather Conlin plants a pinot noir grape plant in San Juan Bautista, Calif. Beyond Bonny Doon, biodynamic winemakers in the state include Grgich Hills Estate, Benziger Family Winery, and Fetzer Vineyards. The principles of biodynamic farming were laid out by philosopher Rudolf Steiner, who also gave us Waldorff schools, after farmers approached him with a problem. The newfangled chemicals helped them produce and keep down the pests, but seemed to sap the vitality of their vegetables and livestock. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez)
