“Dream Hunt,” (above) created by Tim Trost, Jared Trost and Jim Krueger, took third prize and the artists’ choice award in the snow sculpting competition at the 2008 St. Paul Winter Carnival. The team, which was won the competition many times over the years, will be back carving Jan. 23-25 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.
In the ice carving competition, local carvers Chris Swarbrick of Ice Occasions in Ellsworth and Greg Schmotzer, a Red Wing native, took first place in the multi-block contest last year and first and third in the single block professional competition. This year, multi-block ice carving will take place Jan. 22-24 at Rice Park. Single-block carving will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 25 at the park.
The St. Paul Winter Carnival runs from Jan. 22 through Feb. 1 at locations throughout the city. Parades will be Jan. 24 and Jan. 31. Visit the Web site for a complete schedule of events.
