Jodi Schultz takes a break from her studies to spend time with her 3-year-old daughter, Skylar, and their dog, Jade, at her rented farmhouse in rural Glyndon, Minn. Schultz graduated from the University of North Dakota in 2007 with $70,000 in student loan debt but failed to land a job in the forensic science field. She currently works as a health care office specialist but says more than half her wages go to paying off her loan debt, which adds up to about $800 a month. “The 18-year-old getting into all of these loans, they don’t understand what it really entails,” she says.
