Phrenology head

The black markings on the head decorating this small inkwell indicate where the emotions are hidden in the brain. This 5½-inch-high phrenology head was used in the first half of the 19th century. It’s one of a pair that sold for $1,750 at a Doyle New York auction. Cowles Syndicate
