Howling Horse Ranch

Kent Opdahl built the Howling Horse Ranch herd to 120 mares in facilities available when his parents quit the dairy business near Harvey, N.D., about a decade ago. The “9/11” catastrophe crippled horse values in 2001 and a defacto ban on U.S. horse slaughter in 2007 has further depressed horse values. Agweek photo by Mikkel Pates.
