Calves

Young calves are tagged for identification on the Schmidt ranch near Medina, N.D. Ear identification tags provide information about the sire, dam and date of birth for a new calf. This could be one of the “modern” livestock practices being protected by an initiated measure pushed by the North Dakota Farm Bureau, with support from the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association. Some cattle are hot-iron branded later, to prevent theft, as ear tags can be removed. (Mikkel Pates, Agweek)
