In The Sessions, a true story, John Hawkes plays Mark O’Brien, a polio survivor who decides that at 38, he wants to lose his virginity, even though he is confined to life in an iron lung. With the help of his therapists and the guidance of his priest, he sets out to make his dream a reality. O’Brien was paralyzed from the neck down but earned a Ph.D. from University of California Berkeley by tapping typewriter keys with a wooden stick gripped between his teeth. O’Brien died in 1999.
