GM beets

In this Aug. 17, 2010 file photo genetically modified sugar beets are harvested south of East Grand Forks, Minn. On Aug. 13, 2010, the USDA issued a ruling that halted the planting of Roundup Ready sugar beets until an impact study could be completed. The ruling had a widespread effect since nearly all of the nation's sugar beet farmers had converted to genetifcally modified seed, which accounts for half of the nation's sugar supply. Last week federal farm officials released a proposed plan to partially deregulate genetically modifided sugar beets but industry officials say it's getting late for producers hoping to plant a crop next spring.
