The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) has started a propaganda campaign called, “Don’t CAP Our Future.” Its goal is to derail climate-change legislation.
It says the climate legislation in Congress would drive food prices so high, only bailed-out Wall Street bankers afford to eat. Who is the Farm Bureau?
Calling itself “the Voice of Agriculture,” its website pictures are reminiscent of Old MacDonald’s farm. In fact, the Farm Bureau is one Washington’s most powerful lobbying groups. It has little to do with small farmers and much to do with large factory farms, big agribusiness and insurance companies.
Most AFBF “members” do not farm. They are customers of its insurance companies. The AFBF claims to have 4.9 million members. The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture estimates there are less than 1.9 million farms.
Despite billions in revenue, the Farm Bureau retains a nonprofit status that allows it to use the U.S. tax code to fund an extreme, right-wing political agenda that often works against family farmers. The AFBF thinks the humane society is a “radical” group.
In 1965, the AFBF opposed the Voting Rights Act. It calls for the elimination of the Environmental Protection Agency and the departments of Education, Energy, and Fish and Wildlife.
It opposed the Equal Rights Amendment, the Occupational, Health and Safety Act, the Clean Water Act and pesticide control efforts. It opposes minimum wage legislation and extending social security and unemployment insurance coverage to farm workers. It fights to reduce restrictions on importing foreign laborers and opposes the organizing of farm workers.
The Farm Bureau plays a major role in the corporate socialism scheme to redistribute middle class income to the profit columns of Big Ag. Disguised as Old MacDonald, the AFBF is actually a grim reaper sitting on the death panel killing America’s family farms.
