The weekend’s soaking rain ended the burn ban area fire chiefs declared April 13.

Fire departments in Pierce and St. Croix counties responded to several fires in the days before declaring the ban. Several of those started as controlled burns but blazed out of control due to the area’s dry conditions.

Residents should call the non-emergency dispatch number in their county any time they’re having a controlled burn or recreational bonfire, and an annual permit is required for some types of burning.

Calls to the dispatch center help dispatchers know if the fire is accidental or planned whether or not it’s the kind that requires a permit.

The Pierce County non-emergency dispatch number is 715-273-5051; the St. Croix County non-emergency dispatch number is 715-386-4701
