BISMARCK (AP) — The National Crop Insurance Services group says a record $8.6 billion in crop insurance indemnity payments were made to U.S. farmers in 2008, and a lot of that money went to farmers in the Dakotas.

The nonprofit industry trade association said the payments were for losses due to drought and flooding, along with substantial price declines for some major crops.

North Dakota farmers were paid $842 million, and South Dakota farmers $400 million. Iowa led the nation with $1.1 billion.
