More than 600 entrants are participating in the James River Rodeo, officials said, a number that beats the record set two years ago.

The James River Rodeo is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Last year, about 500 entrants participated in the James River Rodeo compared to 583 in 2007. This year, 605 entrants signed up to participate in competitions including bull riding, bareback and team roping.

The number of entries means the James River Rodeo will likely be one of the biggest Rough Rider Rodeos of the year, said Marlyn Bertsch, James River Rodeo committee member.

“It’s going to be a good show for the crowd,” he said.

Bertsch attributes the difference to fuel prices, facility quality and increased advertising.

Tickets to the rodeo are $8 adults, $5 for youth ages 6-16 and free for children under 5 years of age. Performances begin at 6:30 both evenings with slack beginning 30 minutes after each performance.
