Rifle found in deer shining probe

In investigating a deer shining case near the Spirit Lake reservation, officials say they found a rifle reported stolen more than 20 years ago in Devils Lake.

MINNEWAUKAN, N.D. (AP) — In investigating a deer shining case near the Spirit Lake reservation, officials say they found a rifle reported stolen more than 20 years ago in Devils Lake.

Jeffrey Whiteshield of St. Michael was sentenced in Benson County last week for using artificial lights in taking big game.

State and tribal officers said they found two rifles in the vehicle in which the 25-year-old Whiteshield was riding. They said one was a Marlin .30-30 rifle listed as stolen from Devils Lake about 20 years ago.

Court records said Whiteshield told the officers he borrowed both rifles.

Whiteshield’s hunting privileges were suspended for three years and he was ordered to pay $300 in court costs. In Spirit Lake Tribal Court, Whiteshield was ordered to pay a $100 fine and $25 in court costs on the same charge.
