Four Douglas County 4-H members represented Minnesota at the Black Hills Stock Show Horse Quiz Bowl and Hippology Contests in Rapid City, South Dakota on January 30.
The youth earned the trip to the national contest by winning the Minnesota State 4-H Horse Project Bowl contest last April. Twenty-five teams from South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska and Minnesota competed in the Hippology and Quiz Bowl contests.
Team members from Douglas County are Captain Jenna Hedstrom of Alexandria, Angela Bowman of Osakis, Samantha Schlosser of Alexandria and Paige Gabrielson of Alexandria. Barb Hedstrom of Alexandria is the team coach.
Hippology is an activity that can make learning fun for 4-H members by letting them exhibit their knowledge and understanding of equine science and husbandry in a friendly but competitive setting.
The contest consists of four phases: a written test, stations of identification, judging and team problems. The team finished in 6th place and Jenna Hedstrom placed 3rd overall individually.
Horse Quiz Bowl contests are a fun way to learn about horses. The 4-H'ers develop skills such as teamwork, study skills and confidence in speaking. A moderator asks questions taken from reference materials to members on two teams.
The knowledge and skills gained in the participation of this project are carried on to all other aspects of the Minnesota 4-H Horse Program. The team made it to the final round of the contest, and earned Reserve Champion honors. Jenna Hedstrom was also the Individual Reserve Champion.
The team is now gearing up for the Minnesota 4-H Regional Project Bowl contest to be held on March 6 in Foley.
