Two local girls pedaled their way to national competition recently.
Kallista Roers and Averie Mounsdon both advanced through local pedal tractor pull events to the state level, where they performed well enough to advance to the national level.
Mounsdon, daughter of Jason and Carrie Mounsdon of Osakis, competed in the 5-year-old division this summer, while her brother, Riley, competed in the 9-year-old class.
Both earned 1st in their age groups at Miltona Days and at the Sauk Centre Fair, and both earned 3rd place finishes at the Douglas County Fair in Alexandria.
Both qualified for the 2009 Minnesota State Kids Pedal Pull Championships in Hutchinson on September 12. There, Riley finished 9th in his division, and Averie took 1st in hers, earning her a trip to the National Pulls in Mitchell, South Dakota September 26.
This was the second year in a row Averie won her division – last year she was 1st in the 4-year-old division at state and 9th at nationals. Because she turned 6 prior to this year’s nationals, she competed in the 6-year-old age division and earned a 10th place finish out of 34 competitors.
Roers, daughter of Royce and Janelle Roers of Alexandria, competed in the 7-year-old category this summer, earning 1st place at both the Stearns County and Douglas County fairs, 2nd place at the Brandon Mid Summerfest and 1st place at Garfield Days.
These finishes qualified her for the state pull in Hutchinson on September 12, where she earned 3rd in her division and qualified for a trip to the National Pulls. She did not quality for the international event.
All three children took part in tractor pull events sponsored by Brad and Theresa Schmidt of Schmidt Pullers.
