Explosion rocks top of Pine Island grain elevator

An explosion burst out atop a grain elevator in Pine Island Wednesday afternoon.

PINE ISLAND — An explosion burst out atop a grain elevator here Wednesday afternoon.

Dispatchers received the 911 call at 1:57 p.m.

As emergency units were responding, at least one more explosion -- possibly two -- took place, the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office said.

The Pine Island Fire Department reached Farm Country Co-op, 417 N. Main St., shortly after 2 p.m. Firefighters doused the structure for at least an hour before bringing the fire under control.

The Zumbrota Fire Department also responded, bringing a ladder truck.

Pine Island Fire Chief Patrick Pike said no one was believed injured. He said authorities weren't sure what caused the explosion.

All units had cleared the scene by 3:37 p.m. The fire is under investigation
