Organic task force position to be filled from Minnesota

Applicants must be Minnesota residents. The OATF provides recommendations to Agriculture Commissioner Gene Hugoson regarding policies, practices, and programs that will benefit organic agriculture in the state. The term of service ends June 30, 2009.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is seeking a representative from a Minnesota postsecondary research institution to fill one vacancy on the 14-member Minnesota Organic Advisory Task Force (OATF).

Applicants must be Minnesota residents. The OATF provides recommendations to Agriculture Commissioner Gene Hugoson regarding policies, practices, and programs that will benefit organic agriculture in the state. The term of service ends June 30, 2009.

Task force members research opportunities and barriers facing the organic sector, and advise the MDA on the design, prioritization and implementation of its organic programs.

The OATF assists with the design of periodic surveys of organic sector needs and contributes to a biennial report to the state Legislature on the status of organic agriculture in Minnesota.

Members also propose comments on emerging organic standards issues for Commissioner Hugoson to submit to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The group meets approximately four times a year at various Minnesota locations.

Task force vacancies are filled through the state's open appointments process. The application form is available online at http://www.sos.state.mn.us/home/index.asp?page=306.

Interested persons may also contact the Secretary of State's office at 1-877-551-6767. The MDA encourages applicants to submit any biographical or work information they feel would help the Commissioner of Agriculture evaluate their applications.

The deadline to apply for this position is October 26, 2008. The new OATF member will be appointed shortly thereafter. A list of current OATF members is available at www.mda.state.mn.us/food/organic/oatf/ or by calling 651-201-6616.
