State's red-meat production rises

SIOUX FALLS - Commercial red meat production for South Dakota totaled 75.4 million pounds during August. This was up 2 percent from one year ago and up 27 percent from last month.

SIOUX FALLS - Commercial red meat production for South Dakota totaled 75.4 million pounds during August. This was up 2 percent from one year ago and up 27 percent from last month. For August, both pork production and sheep and lamb production were up from one year ago, according to the South Dakota office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Commercial hog slaughter for South Dakota totaled 344,300 head during August,

compared to 343,800 head the year before. Average live weight was 260 pounds,

which was up 10 pounds from August 2008.

Commercial sheep and lamb slaughter for South Dakota totaled 300 head during

August, unchanged from last year. Average live weight was 131 pounds, which was up 10 pounds from August 2008.

Commercial slaughter data for cattle are not published.
