FARGO (AP) — Milk production in North Dakota during January, February and March totaled 94 million pounds, down 4 percent from the first quarter of 2009.

The Agriculture Department says the average number of milk cows during the quarter stood at 21,000, down 4,000 from a year earlier but equal to the previous quarter.

Milk produced per cow was 4,480 pounds, compared with 3,920 pounds last year and 4,420 pounds the previous quarter.

Nationwide, milk production for the three months totaled 47.3 billion pounds, down one-tenth of a percent over the year.
