CORSICA, S.D. – When he was moving farm buildings, which he did when he was not farming or building them himself, Rolland VanderPol often got to see the antique tractors and cars stowed away inside.

Having a peek at the past brought its perks.

“As he was relocating the buildings, he would buy,” said Yvette VanDerBrink, an auctioneer.

Over the years, VanderPol gathered more than 200 collector tractors, trucks and cars, many of them of rare vintage, said VanDerBrink, who is organizing a sale of the collection Aug. 19 and Aug. 20 at the South Dakota Horse Sale grounds in Corsica – about two hours west of Sioux Falls.

VanderPol got his collection started by purchasing, with a friend, an Advanced-Rumely Oil Pull 30-60 tractor, the same model his family used on their initial Dakota Territory land.

“It was only natural this was one of their first purchases,” the VanderPols said in a written statement from the family of Rolland and Hattie, which includes four sons and a daughter.

In the family statement, the sons recall the influx of tractors and classic cars to be relatively constant.

“Just as soon as one got done, another would arrive,” they said.

The antiques frequently were hauled out for local parades and were a point of family pride, making the decision to sell the collection an emotional one, the family stated.

VanDerBrink said she’s been a broker for antique cars and tractors for about 10 years, and the VanderPol collection is one of the most impressive she’s seen.

“This one, with all of them being restored or originals, is pretty amazing,” she said.

The lineup includes nearly two dozen Model T and Model A Fords, both cars and trucks.

The sale is attracting a good deal of attention from buyers across the U.S., with more than 100 people already registered to follow the sale online Aug. 20, when the cars and trucks will be auctioned off, said VanDerBrink.

There haven’t been nearly as many signing up for online access next Friday, when the tractor will be on the auction block.

“The tractors guys like to see their stuff in person,” VanDerBrink said.
