Beet odor might be less in GF this year

GRAND FORKS (AP) — An American Crystal Sugar official says the sugar beet odor outlook in the Grand Forks area this spring is brighter.

The odor results from bacteria growing in sugar-saturated wastewater at the Crystal plant in East Grand Forks, Minn.

Plant manager Lloyd Kennedy says the company has spent more than $1 million on a cover for a 12.5-acre wastewater pond. He says it won't prevent odors but will help manage them.

The company also has installed other equipment aimed at helping with the smells that often waft over the area in spring and early summer.

Kennedy says beet slicing also should be complete around May 7, a week earlier than last year.
