BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State regulators say North Dakota's strong harvest has resulted in a record amount of grain storage licensed this year.
The Public Service Commission says that as of last Friday, there were about 406 million bushels of storage licensed by the state and federal government. That breaks the record of 343 million bushels at this time in 2007.
All grain storage in the state is required to be licensed, bonded and insured to protect farmers if a facility becomes insolvent or suffers a disaster. That includes even temporary storage, such as when grain is piled on the ground due to lack of bin space.
The PSC says there are 60.1 million bushels of temporary storage licensed, compared to the previous record of 46.7 million bushels in late November 2007.
