DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Corn harvest projections are down but this year's crop is still expected to reach near record levels.
A report released Tuesday by the National Agricultural Statistics Service shows corn production forecast at 12.9 billion bushels, down 1 percent from last month but still 7 percent higher than 2008.
Forecast yields also are down from last month at 162.9 bushels, but would still be the highest on record.
In Iowa, forecast yields of 183 bushels per acre are down from October but remain higher than 2008.
Expected yields also were down in Illinois and Michigan. Yields increased in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Iowa agricultural officials say recent warm, dry weather has helped the corn harvest, which at 34 percent complete remains nearly three weeks behind schedule.
