The Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team picked up its first Mid-State Conference win of the season, but couldn’t pick up its first Section 8A victory after splitting games last week.
Sam Coborn’s three goals and three assists led the Panthers to a 7-1 conference win over Wadena-Deer Creek at Long Prairie Thursday night.
On Saturday, the Panthers gave up four second-period goals in a 5-1 section loss to Lake of the Woods at Walker.
The split left the Panthers with a 1-1 record in the conference, an 0-2 record against section teams and a 2-3 overall record.
Coborn leads Panthers to win
Coborn’s two goals and two assists in the second period broke open a close game and led Park Rapids past the Wolverines.
Coborn and Ian Johnson assisted on a goal by Kyle Kanten at the 9:37 mark as the Panthers claimed a 1-0 lead in the first period. W-DC held a 15-7 edge in shots in that period.
Coborn set up Lucas Maves 24 seconds into the second period and scored at the 3:07 mark to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead. Kanten assisted on Coborn’s goal. Coborn set up Johnson for a power-play goal at the 5:26 mark before scoring his second goal of the game at the 14:22 mark. Levi Erickson and Johnson had assists on Coborn’s second goal.
After W-DC closed the deficit to 5-1 early in the third period, Coborn completed his hat trick at the 7:35 mark. Johnson and Benson Ringle had assists on that goal. The Panthers concluded the scoring when Zach Strandlie set up Johnson for a shorthanded goal at the 10:24 mark.
Goalie Cody Brumbaugh made 29 saves for the win as W-DC fell to 0-2 in the conference and 2-5 overall.

Second period sparks LOW
Ian Sugden’s pair of goals in the second period sparked LOW to its first section win of the season.
After a scoreless first period, goals by Travis Mollberg and Sugden within a span of 6 seconds gave LOW a 2-0 lead.
Johnson and Coborn set up Erickson for a power-play goal at the 11:03 mark as the Panthers cut LOW’s lead in half.
Sugden and Wade Holen followed with back-to-back goals in a span of 32 seconds to give LOW a 4-1 lead after the second period.
Isaac Bitter’s goal early in the third period concluded the scoring.
Brumbaugh took the loss, making 27 saves before being replaced by Scott Smith in the third period. LOW improved to 1-2 in the section and 3-2-1 overall.
