The canola industry plans to seek more federal research dollars next year to capitalize on the industry’s potential.

The canola industry plans to seek more federal research dollars next year to capitalize on the industry’s potential.

Northern Canola Growers Association director Barry Coleman says money through the U.S. Department of Agriculture must be acquired annually. He says the industry is looking for permanent funds to pay for canola breeders and technicians.

Coleman says canola farmers are coming off a good growing year, and North Dakota State University breeders say new varieties that might be commercially available in two years could boost yields even more.

Researchers also say studies are being done on whether canola oil might be helpful in battling cancer. If that proves to be true it could boost demand for the crop even more.
