Hay crop a 'total turnaround'

GOLDEN VALLEY (AP) — John Flemmer has been in the hay field for about 50 years near Golden Valley.

In 2008, he saw his worst year. In 2009, with more moisture, he’s seeing his best.

Flemmer says he got 2,400 bales of hay last year on more than 2,000 acres of alfalfa and other land opened to haying due to drought. It was less than half his normal hay crop. He says at least a third of that crop was not even worth cutting.

This year, Flemmer expects at least 5,000 bales of hay. He says it’s a total turnaround from last year, and a “real blessing.”
