A couple of years is as far as Kaleb Santy got with 4-H.
Family circumstances interrupted Santy’s participation in the Maple Grove 4-H Club near his hometown of Pulaski, he said Friday. Besides, much of his life as a youth was focused more on agriculture and the FFA.
“I did show some baked goods and my gerbil,” he said with a laugh, remembering an experience at the Shawano County Fair during that brief stint as a 4-Her.
This summer, the UW-River Falls senior will get reacquainted with the organization as Pierce County’s 4-H intern. He said he heard about the opportunity here from one of his agriculture education professors at the college, who mentioned it.
“It sounded like a good idea,” he said, expressing regret his own 4-H club membership hadn’t lasted longer.
The new intern applied for the position and was interviewed earlier this month, then notified he’d been hired four days later, he said. Although the three-month internship officially starts Wednesday, May 19, he expects to attend a couple of meetings and events before then in preparation.
