Grass fire burns quickly through fields near New Richmond

The New Richmond Fire Department and St. Croix County Sheriff's Department responded to a large grass fire in the Town of Star Prairie Tuesday afternoon.

The New Richmond Fire Department and St. Croix County Sheriff's Department responded to a large grass fire in the Town of Star Prairie Tuesday afternoon.

A call came in from residents along 208th Avenue that a fire was burning out of control near some houses. By the time firefighters arrived, the blaze had spread to a large field nearby.

Dry conditions and fairly high winds whipped up the flames, pushing the fire quickly eastward.

Grass fires have been numerous in recent days as high winds and very dry conditions have proven to be catalysts for fast-spreading blazes. Authorities urge caution when residents light fires in the early days of spring.

For more complete information on the fire, see next week's New Richmond News.
