DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Authorities say a 90-year-old retired farmer is dead after the tractor he was driving rolled into a ravine Thursday in rural Callaway.

The farmer, who lives in rural Callaway, was operating his WD Allis Chalmers tractor with a spring drag along the road when he drove onto the shoulder area at a culvert site, Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon said in a news release.

It appears that the front wheel of the tractor collapsed the embankment, causing the tractor to roll once and trapping the victim underneath the tractor at the bottom of the ravine, the release stated.

The victim, whose name is being withheld pending notification of relatives, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office and Detroit Lakes EMS responded to the accident at 8:09 a.m. on 245th Street.

Based on physical evidence, authorities believe the accident happened one to two hours before the 911 call from an individual who rents the land, the release stated.
