Mitchell, S.D., firefighters worked to extinguish some hay bales that caught on fire on Tuesday evening near Mitchell.

Captain Ben VandenHoek with the Mitchell Fire Division said around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, a man was pulling a commercial hay trailer with eight large, round hay bales. VandenHoek said responders believe one of the bales rolled on top of a tire, and the friction started the fire. No one was injured. All of the bales were a total loss, and the trailer sustained substantial damage. The tractor pulling the trailer was not damaged.

VandenHoek said there is no easy way to extinguish hay bales, so firefighters began tearing the bales apart, made the scene safe, and left the bales to be watched by the owner, Rick Podzimek, of rural Mitchell. VandenHoek said that one-mile stretch of 250th was closed overnight to accommodate.
