RAPID CITY, S.D. — Western South Dakota ranchers who lost livestock in last weekend’s blizzard will be able to dispose of the carcasses for free at several sites around Pennington County.

The county’s Emergency Operations Center says it’s digging pits that will be open to all ranchers on Monday.

Spokesman Calen Maningas says the center is coordinating the effort because the federal Farm Service Agency is part of the federal shutdown.

Ranchers are encouraged to document all livestock losses with pictures, vaccination and hauling receipts.

State officials estimate at least 10,000 to 20,000 head of livestock died, but that estimate will likely rise as more information is gathered.

Carcass disposal guidelines are on the state Animal Industry Board’s website.
