A stretch of U.S. Highway 2 near Lakota, N.D., was closed for about three hours Monday morning after hay bales ignited and burned a semi on which they were being hauled, destroying the vehicle.

Keith Kuehl, 63, of Wahpeton, was driving the truck when he noticed smoke coming from the hay bales, according to a news release from the North Dakota State Patrol. He pulled the semi over near mile marker 225 and was able to escape injury.

Hay burning from contact with an exhaust pipe spread to the bales, igniting them.

The truck was a complete loss.
