LANTRY, S.D. — A South Dakota organization plans to adopt out some of its wild horses in an effort to cut expenses because of high hay prices.

The International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros center in Lantry says it’s difficult to find hay because of the drought, unless it’s trucked in from hundreds of miles away.

Society president Karen Sussman says the center will reduce its four wild horse herds to sustainable levels. The adoptions will start Monday.

Sussman is also asking for hay donations from ranchers throughout the region.
