ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota wheat growers have approved a referendum to increase their commodity check-off rate. The vote was 334 to 154 to increase the wheat check-off from one cent per bushel to two cents per bushel. Through the automatic check-off program, farmers pay a percentage of their sale proceeds to their commodity council to support promotion, communication and research activities aimed at increasing their crop value.
The previous rate had been in place since the wheat check-off was established 30 years ago. The new rate will become effective July 1, 2010.
The growers also elected new board members to serve three-year terms. Those winning a three year term are:
Brian Jensen, Stephen
Wayne Olson, Fosston
Douglas Ruud, Twin Valley
