BROOKINGS, S.D. — A series of "Winter Cereals: Sustainability in Action" plots will feature hard red winter wheat varieties and production treatments for the public to view in June.
Tours will be held in Leola, S.D., at 9:30 a.m. on June 12, Clark, S.D. at 5 p.m. on June 12, and Faulkton, S.D., at 1:30 p.m. on June 14. There is no charge for attending.
Each plot will feature HRWW variety plots and either starter or nitrogen fertility demonstrations. The Faulkton plot will feature a cover crop demonstration featuring radishes seeded into winter wheat. Winter wheat seed treatment trials are also included at two locations and the Clark site has an early maturity soybean variety and seed inoculant trial.
Speakers that are tentatively set to present include Bill Berzonsky, South Dakota State University winter wheat breeder, Ron Gelderman, SDSU Extension soils specialist, Ada Szcezpaniec, SDSU Extension entomologist, Mark Rosenberg, SDSU agronomy-weeds field specialist and Bob Fanning, SDSU plant pathology field specialist. Speakers may vary depending on their availability. Speakers from Ducks Unlimited will discuss their plot management.
The plots were established through collaboration between Ducks Unlimited and Bayer CropScience and SDSU Research and Extension are cooperators in the project.
Directions to the plots are as follows: from Clark eight miles east on U.S. Highway 212, North 0.6 miles on Clark County Road 5 (Garden City Road), West side of road (Elrod School site); from Leola three miles west on Highway 10 (north side of road); from Faulkton two-plus miles west on U.S. Highway 212 (south side of road).
