North Dakota AG asked to weigh in on dairy dispute

CARRINGTON, N.D. (AP) - Foster County commissioners have tabled a request from a Canadian family who wants to set up a dairy about three miles southeast of Carrington.

CARRINGTON, N.D. (AP) - Foster County commissioners have tabled a request from a Canadian family who wants to set up a dairy about three miles southeast of Carrington.

Commission Chairman Dwayne Erickson says Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem is being asked for his opinion on several issues.

The county's zoning board voted last week to recommend the denial of a permit for the 1,500-cow dairy proposed by Corne and Conny Van Bedaf, of Calmar, Alberta. Opponents worry about pollution, lower property values and other problems, while supporters say the dairy would boost the area's economy.

Erickson says one of the questions for Stenehjem is whether the zoning board's recommendation can be used to deny a building permit when the application meets zoning laws.
