DES MOINES, Iowa — Investigators in Iowa and Minnesota are investigating the thefts of nearly 1,000 hogs in what officials say appears to be the work of a well-organized animal theft operation.

Officials in Nicollet County, Minn., say at least 700 hogs have been stolen in recent weeks from facilities in their county and in nearby Kandiyohi County.

Officials in Mitchell County, Iowa, say about 200 hogs were taken from farms there.

Officials say they unsure whether the Iowa and Minnesota thefts are connected.

Nicollet County, Minn., sheriff's investigator Marc Chadderdon says the thefts there are likely the work of people who first conduct surveillance of the farms and then sell the hogs to slaughterhouses in Minnesota or Iowa.
