SD corn production up 16 percent from 2010 level

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — South Dakota's corn production is forecast at more than 662 million bushels, up 16 percent from last year's level.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — South Dakota's corn production is forecast at more than 662 million bushels, up 16 percent from last year's level.

The Agriculture Department says the corn yield is expected to be 138 bushels per acre, up 3 percent from 2010. Harvested acres are expected to be at 4.8 million, up 14 percent from a year ago.

Soybean production is forecast to be nearly 154 million bushels, down 2 percent from last year. Acres for harvest are estimated at 4.05 million, down 2 percent.

Sorghum production is expected to increase by 39 percent from 2010, to 7.35 million bushels. The expected yield of 70 bushels per acre is up 8 bushels from last year, and harvest acres are up from 85,000 to 105,000.
