HELENA, Mont. — The Montana Department of Livestock has released from quarantine a 15-year-old gelding in Gallatin County that tested positive for equine herpes two weeks ago.

Veterinarian Tahnee Szymanski said Friday the state should be in the clear with regard to the virus.

State livestock officials reported on June 11 that the horse was not sick, but tested positive for the virus and was being isolated from other horses. The horse had attended the National Cutting Horse Association Western National Championships in Ogden, Utah, where horses from around the west were exposed to the disease. Ninety horses tested positive and 13 horse fatalities were reported in 10 western states.

Szymanski says all travel restrictions on horses coming into the state have also been lifted.
