The city of Krasnodar was established as Ekterinodar in 1793 and renamed in 1920. It initially was the administration center of the Black Sea Cossack forces and once was known for its resistance to the Soviet regime. The Krasnodar oblast or territory was established in 1937 and is about the size of Oregon. The area was under German occupation during World War II, but was liberated in 1943.
